A number of Teslas were sold as “60kwh” batteries that were physically 75kwh, with 20% of the battery disabled/inaccessible via a software lockout. This enabled Tesla to streamline their production and be able to sell the same physical pack to two different price brackets of customer, and potentially make more money down the road if the customer decided to unlock the remaining capacity.
